What would you do? / Dating / 1:20 PM - Saturday May 17, 2008
A Thinker (Female, Philadelphia, 22-25, Medical / Dental) asked:

If you were out shopping, or out to lunch or whatever, what would you do if you saw a man beating on a women (his girlfriend) in public in broad day light all out in the open?? Are you that person that would just sit and watch? Would you interfere? What would you do?

I would interefere. I hate it when they tell me its none of my business...they make it my business when it happens it front of me! Depending on the actual chian of events would determine if it was appropriate to step in or call the police. Obviously I would not risk my life, but I would never just stand by. The kicker is, most gorls, women usually get mad when you interfere, most likely because they know they will reap the rath later. But standing bu is not an option for me.

I have been in this situation. The man wasn't beating her, he was screaming at her and manhandling her. She had a little girl with her. I stopped and asked her if she needed help. She looked at me for a moment w/sort of a dazed look on her face. So I said, "You don't have to go with him. I'll take you to my apartment (next door)and you can call someone to pick you up". She declined.
It really upset me. I have been in situations before where my ex was grabbing me and cussing at me in front of people. They just watched. That really affected me. It made me feel really helpless and small. I would jump in in a heartbeat if I saw someone being mistreated. All I could do is try and stop the behavior and offer help, but that is what I would do.

I would call 911 and wait until they showed.. I have no way of knowing if this gomer is armed and crazy... and if it was a bad situation I would try to find some burly guy.. but I am not a match for a man with a temper. unless I have my pepper spray then I would mace the crap out of him

I'd probably start screaming, look around for a man to help, and call 911.
I would want to try to stop it, but I wouldn't be stupid and jump into the fray. I'd get help. God, don't let me be carrying a baseball bat...

Oh my goodness! Yes I would have to do something. I couldn't just sit back or walk away. It would eat at me for the longest time. If the guy looked super scary and not too many people around I would just call the cops.

Wait scratch that I would tell my hubby or someone with me to call the cops and I'd go over there.

I hate abuse...

I've interfered before but it is risky and dangerous these days because people carry hidden weapons like guns and/or a knife.

I always dial 911 first though before opening my big mouth to say something (possibly tinged with profanity because of my temper at what is going on). But I could not just stand by and watch someone beat anyone, regardless of its a man and a woman or two men or two women.

I would call 911 and let the police handle it. I inerfered once in the past in a situation just like that and I actually ended up in court because the couple decided go press charged against me for interferring. The charges were dropped, but I was put through hell. I would not ignore it, I would call 911 and remain in the area as a witness just in case the woman wanted to press charges against the man.

I am would definitely get involved, or maybe killed for getting involved! Would NEVER sit and watch...those people are cowards and have absolutely no conscience. I probably would yell for the guy to stop first -- I'm tiny so can't do much to stop it physically. Would yell so people would notice, start a scene....then immediately call police.

I would probably call the police, let them know what was happening, stick around until they got there and make sure that she was okay...I wouldn't get right in between them in case he hit me, but I would stay close enough so that I could hear what was being said and keep an eye on her...I wouldn't want to just watch because it would be like I was 'accepting' that things like this happen and I don't believe that it is something that should happen to anyone...once the police got there, I would let them know what was going on and give any information they needed and then make sure the woman would be okay...:D

no one as a right to hit another. not having such right, we see it, we hear of hit many times.
your question touch me.
as a child, i watch my step dad hit my mom'which would send me underneath my bed hiding my face.
when i got older, i learn the reason, of why my step dad would hit my mom.
when thing didn't go well in his world, he would take it out on my mom.it were really heart breaking!
i promise myself from a child, i will not allow any man to lift forth his hands to strike me'and wouldn't you know! the very thing, i promise myself, i wouldn't allow to happen(happen)
i married at the age of 23yrs of age.
my husband were 13yrs older than myself.
his reason for striking me were, afraid of loosing me to another man(sick)
so many mens who hit their spouse will not seek help for their illness unless they are force.the danger of staying with a striker and that is,you don't know if he will stop or strike again' or if you are even he would come out alive. to this very day, it's amaze me, of how he made me felt that, i were the reason of why he strike me. and at that time, i felt i were the reason.
as long as one fell they deserve their spouse to hit them, they will remain. some make it out alive and some don't.
i thank God! i made it out safe, and he as-well.
answer to your question
no i will not stand around,
i will cry out, shout to the uttermost top of my voice for help.
dealing with a striker, you must be very careful in how you choose to help the one being strike.
depend upon the degree of angry, rage,of the striker, being to near could bring great harm to the one who's trying to help the victim.

I'd have someone else call 911, while I started screaming "fire" get everyone to look at him. Interfering is dangerous, but sometimes it is needed.

I would call the police, and I would interfere and I would try to coax her away from the situation. If he was swinging something or had a gun, I'd stay close, but too close. But I would not ignore the situation. I'm the person who will step in if someone is being screamed at on public. Some people just are not aware that they are creating a nuisance and need to be redirected. Others need to have the police called on them ASAP.

I saw that happen a couple of years ago. I stopped and intervened and took the girl to the local police station, where she filed charges. Se seemed thankful that someone finally helped her. Apparently this was not the first time she was hit, but it was the first time someone tried to help her.

if someone was physically beating up another person in public, it is the duty of anyone who sees it to at least call the cops minimally and preferably to intervene immediately to try to stop the situation. personally, i would phyically try to pull the guy off or step in the middle so the girl would no longer get hurt, and i would yell to tell someone else to call the police. because if you dont step in and stop the situation immediately, it could very well escalate and the girl/lady could very well be dead or severely injured before the police had a chance to arrive. my theory is try to stop the attack any way possible first, to protect the girl and give the police time to arrive and settle the situation and the medical personal time to arrive to take care of any injuries.

i would pray the guy wasnt secretly carrying a weapon, but i would still try to stop him regardless of whether he had one or not. that's just my nature, i can't stand for anyone deliberately hurting or physically attacking anyone else.

I am that person who as soon as I see something like that I will grab my phone and dial 911! I definately would not walk up to them and interfere just because that is dangerous, but I would not just sit back and let it happen. No woman deserves to be hit by a man, especially not in public where everyone can see her pain and embarrassment!

I had next door neighbors when I was married to Swamp Thing who'd get in huge fights while the Swamper was home and I was working....They escalated to the point where the Swamp Thing offered assistence to the woman, who refused it........they moved away within 2 weeks.
Their son told me much later that he thought his parents did it because it turned them on.......go figure.
