A Thinker (Female, 46-55, Who Cares?) asked:

A neighbor just called to tell me that a car took out my mail box and is sitting in the ditch in front of my house.

I have, well I guess HAD, one of those $500 security mail boxes to keep my ex from messing with my mail.

Will their car insurance have to pay to replace it?

I know my home owners insurance would cover it, but it would be the same as my deductable.

The car is no longer there. I hope they reported it to the police.

Update: January 23, 2008.
Just called the County Seriff's office. There WAS a deputy at the scene, so there WILL be a report... after he finished the next accident he is on his way to. That 8 inches of snow we got yesterday has left a lot of slick spots around the county. The biggest pain about this will be that I won't be able to put in a new box until Spring. And our little podunk post office is only open from 9 to 11 and 1 to 3, Monday through Friday, so I'll have to take off work in the middle of the day to drive the ten miles to get my mail for the rest of the Winter. Big UGGGHHH!

They SHOULD have to pay for it! Check with the police asap to get the property damage report and the driver's insurance information!

Good luck!

I'd think that it will be more than $500 in grief & aggravation before you'd ever get any satisfaction from an insurance company.

Unless you love a long, drawn out fight, you should probably start preparing to replace it our of your own pocket.

Yes, they or their insuracne would have to pay, hopefully your neighbor got the plate number and they called the police, sounds like the suspect did not, likley drunk or at minimum reckless and would have gotten a ticket. call the neighbor, if they did not report, u report it asap. at very least you will need a report for your home insurance but police may find the car for u. time is of the essence.

Yes the driver is liable. And in fact, it's a hit and run when you leave the scene of the accident. The driver can be in trouble big time.

I had the same problem with ex-s screwing with my mail. The absolute best solution is a PO box. If you're situation happened to me when I was a bachelor, I would believe it was an ex that drove it over. There's some crazy women out there.
