Breast cancer drugs/pregnancy

A Thinker (Female, Dallas, 29-35, Who Cares?) asked:

Re: breast cancer, so my mother and sister both had breast cancer in their early 30s, as well as I have had issues with my breast in the past. On top of it my sister tested positive for the breast cancer gene.

So I have an option to go on anti-cancer drugs because I am "high risk", the same drugs they give women that have had breast cancer already to prevent it from coming back.

Now my s/o and I want to get married and have a child within two years. These drugs effect your ability to get pregnant, now it is not impossible, but it will make it harder. I am 33 by the time I get pregnant 35, so it may be harder anyways without the drugs. My s/o suggested that I waited till after we had our child. My question is would you wait? Or would you start treatment now knowing the high risk group you in. Remember I am 33, mom had it at 31, sister at 35.

I will go on these drugs, just trying to figure when. Thanks.

HI Kdtxchic30

We have a very similar breast cancer pattern in our family...My mum has the breast cancer gene...
I'm in the high risk group too...
I'm part of a breast cancer familial study here in Australia nd have been for several years...It is my understanding from the information that I have that you have several other options open to you besides the drugs...

Regular preventative screening...ultrasounds etc etc also I've been given the option of a double mascectomy with implant replacement.... which will INCREDIBLY reduce my risk....because it
removes most of the breast tissue...I decided to delay surgery until AFTER I have finished having children .

At the moment I've been opting for the preventative screening. Ultrasounds as opposed to mammogram because the breast tissue is younger...I'm 32.

If I were in your sitaution I would wait...only because you do have other options, which are endorsed by the breast cancer foundation....which are open to you...

Also the breast cancer foundation have counsellers who can be with you every step of the way no matter what you decide.

With all due respect, he's just your boyfriend. At this stage, he doesn't get to ask you to do anything. This is YOUR life. If he doesn't want to marry you unless you can have a child, you need to seriously question him.

I would do tons of healing work, positive affirmations, eat totally clean, holistic approach..some women opt to the anti cancer drug route and some do elective mastectomys..scary stuff...

Any chance you could move up your wedding and baby? That would be my choice if I were in your shoes. Otherwise I would start the prescription now, and take my chances with conception later. My best wishes to you...

if i read right, you're intending to preventatively go ont eh drug one day here? So if there's no actual medical indication that it MUST start immediately, why can't it wait until you've had a child? If the age is a rush when it comes to the meds, maybe you should rush the date to get married adn get that famiy started....just advice, but you're both grown ups, you know what you want....I'd assume you also know the risks of getting pregnant in your mid thirties...I don't think I'd wait myself...good luck

Wow, this is a tough one. This is my sincere advice - Start trying to conceive immediately. Hop on a plane to Jamaica or the Virgin Islands and get married at a Sandals resort ASAP. Have your child as soon as you can, and then immediately go on the drugs.

Why don't you get tested to see if you have the gene before doing anything? You may not need the drugs.

If I were you, I would have kids before going on the drugs, consider moving up the "when" of having kids.

Do you have the BRACa 1 or 2 gene? If not you may not need treatment. You are right here in Dallas, where the Komen Foundation does very good counseling. Take advantage of that and find out from them. You may have options you didn't know you had. I am a 12 yr. survivor and doing well although my other breast is considered high risk and I have mammograms, sonos, and see my surgeon every 6 mo. Good luck to you.
