An Alternative Girl (Female, Washington, DC, 26-28, Teaching) asked:


I always thought I would be in academia, but now I am considering a career in medicine, because there is so much more job opportunity. Right now I am confined to a small number of locations bc of my job, but if I switch fields, I could work almost anywhere.

Has anyone else made a drastic career change?

How did it work out for you?

I'm not speaking from expierence, but I think you should go with what you love to do, not whether or not you can work anywhere, how much you get paid (although if you can't support yourself doing it, it might be a problem).

Idealistic, true, but rewarding if you take pride in the work. If you dread all the work someone in medicine might do, like a Dr. being on call all the time, you wont enjoy your life, and what good is a career without a life to enjoy it with?

I was in academica, tossed it all and moved to the Caribbean to start my own biz...my income went from 70K USD to 20 K USd and I am so happy....

Well I was a teacher from age 20 to age 26. Then I "retire" to raise a family. In that time, I had two small businesses, so I guess that would be considered a career change which lasted over twenty years. Then I returned to teaching at age 50, recently completed and received Principal Certification. It is not over yet. I have lots of plans, if God allows it. You never know what you are capable of till you try. Enjoy it all!!!!
