A Life of the Party (Female, Atlanta, 26-28, Self-Employed) asked:

hey this question is for the ladies? when your in a relationship and have decided to become exclusive with one another what type of birth control have you chosen to use when you stopped using condoms. (I.U.D., birth control pills, sponges, film, etc.) I really want to know if anyone has tried anything other than birth control and how well it has worked for you.

I have never taken birth control pills because I am very sensitive to hormones. Rarely have my boyfriends used condoms, they were all jerks and cared only about themselves. Now I use the spermicidal film, although it irritates me and I have to wash it out afterward. I do worry about STDs though because not using a condom can transmit just about anything so I'd say the only safe way to go is use a condom for birth control, no matter what. If a guy doesn't like it, screw him. (by not screwing him I mean) I have never become pregnant, although I am probably not fertile due to a eating disorder years ago and had lost my period for years. My current birth control methods would probably not be very effective for someone that is very fertile.

I use the patch. They really DO stay on no matter what, they're convenient, easy, and they WORK. I love it and will never go back to the pill.

I've been using birth control pills for years. My favorite brand is Ortho-Cyclen. I love it. Not only it keeps me child free, it also makes my periods less bothersome.

For the women who say that they are using the patch, be careful, I've heard that quite a few females got blot clots from it because patch releases 60% more hormones into your skin and then the bloodstream compared to the amount of hormones in an average birth control pill. I personally, have never tried the patch and do not want to take that risk.

As far as the birth control pills go, most pills are 99+% effective for women who weigh no more than 145 lb. The more the woman weighs, after 145 lb, the less effective the pill is for her. Also, I've heard that low-dose birth control pills are less than 99% effective (low dose--20 mg estrogen compared to 30 and 35 mg).

I have taken the pill. Different types, Ortho Cyclen & Jasmine. I am now considering taking them again. I heard too many bad things about the Patch. Condoms are great, but once things get serious, most guys don't want to use them. Do your research, the the only way- the internet is great, just type birthcontroloptions.com .

I hate condoms I am on the pill it has great results no kids but you cant't smoke and it does have some side effects when I first took it I felt nausa but now I'm ok the iud has two types 1 last for 5 years and releases low hormones the other lasts 10 tears and is copper but you need to be in a commited relationship the ring you incert in your vagina for 3 weeks at a time then when you take it out you get your perion I liked that one it had fer side effects you can't feel it and you don't have to worry about taking a pill there are so many great types I sugest your GYN if you don't have one or low on funds many states have plahnned parent hood wich is great good luck

I'm on the pill (the doctor prescribed it), which makes it easier when I have a boyfriend, of course he doesn't know about that until I know he's clean. Birth control works great, as long as you don't forget to take it every day at the same time.
